In a perfect world a wide selection of solar energy options would be available for little or no cost. Until that elusive day, we in the industry will continue to promote the technology, lobby our government leaders and support efforts by lenders to offer low-cost home improvement loans for the purchase of equipment. The ideal St. John home incorporates all of the solar energy options described in this website complemented by conservation and “green building” techniques like insulation, optimal roof orientation and “thermal chimney” design. The type of roof material has a bearing on a solar installation. The ubiquitous “barrel tile” roof is very difficult to mount panels on. Unless mounting hardware is installed prior to the tiles the job is almost too risky to undertake. New “standing seam” metal roofing is ideal. Mounting hardware can be purchased that is “non-intrusive”, making no new holes in the surface.
